I used to think Will Ferrel was funny...

until I watched the video.  I know I was in the minority, but I still enjoyed him some times.  I freakin' love Elf!  One of my favorite Christmas movies (this reminds me I haven't watched it yet or Christmas Vacation)!  Old School is another classic.  That all went away after this.

Fast Five

I love Vin Diesel!!!  The trailer for the new Fast and the Furious is out and it looks like everyone from the last 4 movies is in it!  Well except Letty who is dead.  But who cares it has everyone well else.  These movies make me act like a teenage girl!  I am giddy.

A Million Reasons to Believe

Tis the Season for Giving

For every letter sent to Santa at a Macy's mailbox a $1 will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Santa's special mailboxes are located in Macy Stores nationwide.  You can even write and decorate your letter at the Macy's website and then print them off to mail in the store!  I know this is a way to bring people to the stores, but it is still a good cause.  They will donate up to a $1 million.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries has some great photos of the response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.  The easiest way I have found them is through their Facebook page.

Zedonk!

A zedonk is half zebra and half donkey. Pippi's mother was a donkey and her daddy was a zebra and she is all cuteness! She was named her Pippi because of her striped legs resembling Pippi Longstocking.

Cracking the Code

Credit card security has a secret code to validate cards. You start with a number then cross out every other one and double it. Then cross out any double digits and add them together. Then add all the numbers that are not crossed out together and if it is divisible (i don't know if that is the right word!) by 10 it is a good number! Seems a little complicated, but is it pretty cool that it works when you try it. MSN Money has a an article on it that includes a worksheet that you can download and fill out.

Monkey Discover

I think it is great that after thousands of years of human habitation they are still discovering new species. You would think that every inch of this earth had been traveled and all flora or fauna has been discovered.

200TH POST!!!

Its been a long and sometimes strange year this last year. I was surprised a couple of weeks ago to see that I was getting close to 200 posts! And some people thought it wouldn't last;) My post are usually random and pretty much the only thing holding them together is their randomness and I know this. Still think this is better than the emails I would send to my friends with the 10 links to whatever I thought was interesting (10 links is a average or maybe an exaggeration). The best thing I have to post today is a picture of my baby from her 1st birthday! Her party was this last Saturday and all I heard all day from my Mom and Gram was they couldn't believe how many people were at the party. I have good friends and Leigh is well loved and Saturday was a great example of that.

Top 50 American Road Side Attractions

I love road side attractions and the picture for the link to the story was the Cadillac Ranch in Texas where we stopped in April on the way home from Santa Fe. I don't really have time to look through the list right now, but if I post about it on my blog maybe I can get back to it someday!

Favorite picture I took at the Cadillac Ranch.

Lost Ansel Adams Negatives

Negatives that were bought 10 years ago in a yard sale for $45 are valued today at $200 million! Some of the negatives have never had prints made from them. They are thought to be some of his early work that was believed to have been lost in a fire.

Saving a Sacred Mountain

The Dongria Kondh tribe in India is fighting to save their sacred mountain in India from a British company Vedanta Resources who wish to mine to mountain for bauxite. The story is similar to the movie Avatar except as far as I know the company is not coming in a ginormous robotish suits. Survival International is helping them try the mountain that is elemental to their survival and way of life.

Heart Attack Waiting to Happen

The Heart Attack Grill in Chandler, AZ is home to the Quadruple Bypass Burger which is four patties, eight slices of cheese and a few other things which may not be quite as unhealthy like onion. You can also wash all this down if you can stomach that much food with Jolt Cola. I think I just threw up a little even writing about it. Also if you are over 350 pounds you eat for free! To me that is kinda like rewarding bad behavior. I can't think of anyone that ways that much and is truly healthy. I am not the healthiest eater, but this is a lot of fat, calories and caffeine. It is kinda sad with the high rates of obesity in the US. I saw the burger on a list on Health.com of the 50 Fattiest Foods in the States. I see these type of lists all the time on a variety of websites. Why don't we have the 50 Healthiest Foods in the State?

Doggie CODIS

Researchers are beginning to compile a database of canine DNA to track and prosecute dog fitting. I think anything that puts a stop to this vicious sport (I wouldn't even call it a sport) is great. I hope this also can be used for more projects and lead to more interest and allow it to continue to grow.

War Dogs with Sunglasses

The blog post is about a veterinary hospital at Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio, Texas for dogs injured in the field. What is really cool though is the picture of the soldiers with their dogs wearing sunglasses! It doesn't say where the photo is from so I am just linking to the story.

Good Luck

In a village in Pakistan there are sacred crocodiles that bring good luck. They were created when a saint left his lice there 700 years ago according to the article on CNN. Pilgrims bring offerings and hold children over the crocodiles for good luck. How do lice turn into crocodiles?

Dirty Dozen

Environmental Working Group suggests eating organic fruits and vegetables from the "dirty dozen" list. The fruits and vegetables included in the list had 47 to 67 pesticides per serving. The testing was done after the fruits and vegetables were power washed by the USDA. That's right I said power washed! As you can tell the washing them doesn't get rid of the pesticides! The pesticides are higher in these fruits and vegetables because of the skin or the roots.

The Dirty Dozen

Celery

Peaches

Strawberries

Apples

Domestic blueberries

Nectarines

Sweet bell peppers

Spinach, kale and collard greens

Cherries

Potatoes

Imported grapes

The following fruits and vegetables have a stronger outer skin and have little to no pesticides.

The Clean 15

Onions

Avocados

Sweet corn

Pineapples

Mango

Sweet peas

Asparagus

Kiwi fruit

BP Logo

Greenpeace is raging a war against BP and I don't have a problem with that. They have sent out a call to redesign BP's logo to reflect their current problems. Not only are they in the news for the Deepwater Horizon, but Greenpeace also says they are "poised to invest in Canadian tar sands." According to Greenpeace this is the most environmentally unfriendly oil extraction.

Holograms???

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Nebraska quoted in the Omaha World-Herald

“I've never used an ATM, so I don't know what the fees are,” Nelson said, adding that he gets his cash from bank tellers, just not automatic ones. “It's true, I don't know how to use one.

“But I could learn how to do it just like I've . . . I swipe to get my own gas, buy groceries. I know about the holograms.”

By “holograms,” Nelson clarified that he meant the bar codes on products read by automatic scanners in the checkout lanes at stores such as Lowe's and Menard's.

What Up

Mating Rituals with Isabella Rossellini

Isabella Rossellini's new series on the Sundance Channel is called Seduce Me. It is very strange is all I can say. I don't know how people come up with this. According to the credits Isabella is writer, director, and star. I am almost speachless. Don't watch at work and prepare to be disturbed.

If you go to the Sundance Channel website there is also a Green Porno Name Generator. Mine is Salema! I have no idea what green porno means or what my name means. WTF

Cape Wind

The go ahead has been give by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to build the US's first offshore wind farm! It seems there is some backlash about ruining the view of the Cape, but is that more important than the earth? I don't know a whole lot about wind power, but it would seem to be less harmful that coal mining or drilling for oil. There is some footprint to the windmills and it could be disruptive to the animals that live there, but they would probably adapt. I have a whole lot of questions about wind power and the affects of the windmills. On the surface though it seems to be a favorable alternative to fossil fuels.

Leigh Visiting the Office

1st Plane Ride

Happy St. Patty's Day

Alexandria Zoo

Billy, Sam, Belinda, Linda, Leigh and I went to the Alexandria Zoo last Saturday. It is a fun little zoo and makes a pretty cheap afternoon. Billy was a little sad because there were no elephants or giraffes, but I think he got over it. Belinda and I both believe that the Black Bear is myth. All the times we have been there neither of us have ever see the bear!

I want to move to Shanghai...

were you can wear pajamas all the time! I love pajama bottoms and think someone should start making pants like them. Gap makes the best ones and sadly one of my pairs is about to bite the dust. A bleach stain led to a hole on the back of one of the legs, but I prevailed and sewed the tear closed and they have lasted several more years. My biggest regret lately is that when I was at Gap Outlet the other day and pajama bottoms were on clearance I only bought one pair! I so should have got a second.

The pajama wearing in Shanghai is one of the topics of the new book Planet Shanghai by Justin Guariglia.

243 Guns Lost...

by officers with Homeland Security! Wow is all I can really say. 179 were lost "because officers did not properly secure them," according to the report. I sure you are asking what not properly securing them means. Well it means they were left in bathrooms and gone when the officer can back looking for them or the from seat of unlocked vehicles in a lunchbox and gone when the officer came back two days later. All I can say is wow!

Truth-O-Meter

Politifact reviews statements made by politicians to see if they are true or not! It does take into account varying degrees of truthfulness which is helpful and some of the statements they pick are interesting.

Barely True
"We're also cutting a Forest Service economic development program that strayed so far from any mission that it funded a music festival."-Barak Obama

Half-True
"Thomas Jefferson created the Marines for the Islamic pirates that were happening."-Glenn Beck

Found this fun website through Federal Daily newsletter which had a brief "Feds Make Twice As Much? Really?" in response to Senator Scott Brown's statement that federal employees make twice as much as private sector. The Truth-O-Meter finds this False!

Plugged in Online

Apparently there was some controversy about the Tebow commercial during the Super Bowl last night (Yeah Saints!). I didn't hear about it until this morning and didn't really get why from the commercial so I had to go look up the Focus on the Family website mentioned at the end of the commercial. I don't really get worked up about messages like this because I think when you look at the source take things with a grain of salt. I couldn't resist clicking on the website mentioned at the bottom of the page though. There was a link to Plugged in Online that reviews entertainment. The reviews are pretty harsh at times which make them amusing to me.

Review comments from Legion:
" It is so bad that it could kill monkeys."
" It is so bad it should come with a surgeon general's warning—and a government tax for causing cancer."
"Legion is nothing more than the reckless musings of someone who knows about as much about the Bible as I know about macroeconomics."

Dude this review makes me want to see the movie even more!

My favorite drink turns 125!

The first thing I asked for when I got back to the US after spending a couple weeks in Guatemala was a Dr Pepper. After my mom picked my up at the airport our first stop was Sonic! Sonic Dr Pepper with cherry is super yummy and probably my favorite drink. Who knew that Dr Pepper is 125 years old! I found out during my perusal of Pop Candy Blog today.

Angel Dog

I need a feel good story after the last one with the tattooing parents.

Family's 'Angel' dog saves boy from cougar attack

An 18-month old golden retriever puppy named Angel saved her 11-year old owner Austin from a cougar attack on Saturday. After the mother called for help a constable quickly arrived at their home and shot the cougar. Angel survived with bites and scratches and has received a good prognosis.
